  • My Story

I've done many runs before of varying times and distances and always for my own sense of achievement and personal challenge. Until now fundraising for a hobby of mine has always seemed unnecessary and I've never really been arsed to go out there and tap people for a bit of cash!

That was until I became involved with Harrison's Fund. Harrison's Fund is charity local to me committed to finding a cure for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is a stinker of a disease. It's the most common fatal genetic disorder to affect children around the world. If you've got it, you can't produce dystrophin, a protein you need to build up your muscles. As a result, every muscle in the body deteriorates. At the moment there is no cure.

The facts about Duchenne are inescapable:

Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy is 100% fatal

Most kids with it die in their late teens or early twenties

Most with it are usually in a wheelchair by the age of 12

It leads to respiratory failure, heart failure, and other debilitating orthopaedic complications

One in 3,500 boys is born with it, and in the UK 2,500 kids has it at the moment. You can have it, no matter where you are or what your ethnic background is. Harrison's parents set up this charity with the aim of finding a cure for this horrendous disease. As a Dad myself I cannot imagine the strength you would have to find to fight, but that's what they are doing.

With every run that I do I feel so lucky to have full use of my muscles and can choose to go flat-out, for a gentle jog or up hills and mountains as I choose. Harrison and boys like him simply don't have that choice. I am running because they can't.

I wonder if my friends could find it in themselves to get behind me for this run and donate just a pound or two to help find a cure for this disease- it would really mean a lot to Harrison and his family.

Harrison's Fund has one goal. To get as much money as possible into the hands of the world's best researchers, who are working to find a cure for Duchenne. It sounds like a horrible disease. And it is. Which is why we want to eradicate it ... Read More
